Scooter Accident
In March 2013 two girls crashed into me on their scooter as I was turning out of my drive way, they had no crash helmets, no license, no insurance and …..no brakes!
I found out that they were 12 years old and in a hurry to get home from school at 4pm (supposedly the minimum age for driving a scooter is 16!) I was thrown heavily off my bike on to the concrete, fortunately my crash helmet took the shock and my back-pack with my computer cushioned the fall. I escaped with a sore back and quite a shock!
They escaped luckily with just a few cuts and bruises. I paid for them to go to the hospital to get correct treatment and we agreed to pay for our own scooters to be repaired. Since then I’ve been toying with the idea of buying a car.

I sponsored my student Chan to take driving lessons every week-end for two months and when it came to his driving test, I asked him where he would like to have dinner to celebrate if he succeeded in passing his test….. he looked at me curiously and said “I’ve paid for my driving lessons and my license, I don’t need to pass the driving test to get my license!” …..a long way from the stress I felt when taking lessons to get my first license up-North in Yorkshire!

Lao New Year “Pee My” No Rain but –water everywhere
I bought a car in April 2014, what a pleasure to be inside with the windows up and the air-con on… but there’s so much fine brown dust in the dry atmosphere that even the air-con is not very comfortable. But it’s a good investment anyway for the hot season and for protection during the rainy season coming soon.
I bought it just before Pee My, the Lao New Year, (April 14 to 16th) when for almost a week water is thrown on everyone, everywhere, even from passing pick-up trucks equipped with bathtubs of water and giant water bazookas, the kids take a delight in trying to drown everyone on a motor bike. I was happy to be in my car with the windows-up!
