Meeting of the European & Asian Nations
In November 2012, Laos hosted the 8th Meeting of European and Asian Nations, followed by the Asian University Games in December, like the Olympics but limited to universities.
Since the beginning of 2012 there has been a frenzy of road improvements including the road I use to get home on my scooter.
It’s a ruthless process as the road cuts into houses, shops, access to smaller lanes without any discussion or alternatives, as you can see from the photos below.
On the road from the airport, and other main arteries there’s flower and tree planting, cleaning and painting to make Vientiane pretty.

Luxury villas on the Mekong are being built rapidly to house the 40 Prime Ministers and Presidents, and an enormous International Convention Center. With all these prestigious events being held in little Laos for the very first time the Government closed the National University from October 2012 through to January 2013 to use the students for welcoming guests, participating in ceremonies and for beefed-up security….Laos did not want Francois Holland or any other dignitary to be assassinated on its soil! Night clubs and bars closed at 11:30pm and there was a curfew imposed on being out after midnight especially for young people. |
