Sponsoring Students

School costs
Tuition fees at the Lao-American College (LAC), one of the best universities in Laos, currently costs about $750-$1000 per year. Polytechnic University costs $150 per year, local high schools and junior schools cost from $100 per year. The cost of books and other materials must be added. The quality of teaching varies enormously from school to school; many students at the National University go to private schools in the evening to learn English and other subjects indispensable to finding a job later.
The poorest university and high school students come from villages100’s of kilometers from Vientiane because there are no universities or high schools in their localities. They have to find accommodation in primitive dormitories or share local “garage” type rooms and make their own meals, usually noodle soup for breakfast, lunch and dinner!
Many of them work to pay for fees, meals and accommodation, but with salaries of $50 to $80 per month, it is very difficult for them to cope.
Student commitment
Students we sponsor make a commitment to maintaining an acceptable academic level. Without our help most of them would not be able to follow their studies, they are very appreciative of the help we provide. Sponsorships are not renewed automatically; the student must achieve the minimum level pre-determined at the beginning of the school year.

Selection of needy students
Student selection is based on several criteria such as, financial needs, academic potential and performances, involvement in school, sports and social activities, and any specific conditions set by the sponsor.
Participating schools and universities have committees, composed of professors and a representative from AEDECOL, to propose and select eligible students.
Students must enroll in the scholarship/sponsorship program at the beginning of each year, joining their grades and a letter of motivation to be examined by the committees.

Motivation
AEDECOL and/or the student inform regularly sponsors on academic performance.
As mutual contact evolves we encourage sponsors to become “foster fathers” providing counseling and assistance, exchanging family photos and generally motivating students to succeed, especially High-school and University students. The assistance and encouragement sponsors provide will make a difference for the rest of his or her life.

Visit – Participate
Sponsors are invited and encouraged to visit the school or university where student are studying. They can meet staff and share academic and professional experiences, perhaps participate in courses in cooperation with the teachers and of course meet students.

Sponsoring is welcome at all level.
Sponsoring University entrance & entry to private universities like Lao-American is particularly important as you’re educating the next generation of political and business leaders.
So much has changed since Lao Independence in 1975 and an English speaking, international outlook is needed to move Laos forward in the ASEAN community, WTO and other representations in World economics and politics.
