About 25 years ago, Virginia Van OSTRAND, an American, and graduate from the University of Pennsylvania, created an English language school which eventually grew to become the Lao-American College, a private University. “Ginny” is still managing and developing the School although she’s over 80! She deserves an Emeritus Medal!

In 2002, the Private School Division of the Lao Ministry of Education (MOE) accredited LAC to grant Bachelor's Degrees in Business and English. A third Major “Hospitality Management” is under formation. The Ministry of Education is currently re-examining the role of all Private Universities to grant Degrees in order to co-ordinate more fully with the National University of Laos.

The Lao-American College (LAC) is a private, non-profit, multi-level educational institution. Its purpose is to work cooperatively with public and private organizations to be a leader in the promotion of active learning, analytical skills and professional training in order to develop the high potential of the Lao people at all levels of education. Its motto is
"Education is the key to a brighter tomorrow"

LAC is focused on developing cost-effective educational opportunities in the Lao PDR in order to reach the greatest number of students.

Its special focus is assist students to study locally but to think globally. Both coursework and student activities are designed to promote problem-solving and creative thinking skills needed in the new economy of a rapidly changing world.
Study tours and visits to companies and organizations, implementing the concept of students helping each other through supervised cadet teacher programs, acquisition of computer and Internet skills, student research projects and other student projects in “micro enterprises” currently being developed, are reinforcing classroom learning.  LAC emphasizes the social dimensions of learning, both theory and practice, that are needed to encourage individual responsibility and performance.

Teamwork concepts are also enhanced through team sports and social activities.
LAC is constantly creating and enriching its course offerings in response to student needs and the needs for qualified staff for both government and private enterprises.
