FUTURE PROJECTS, + we welcome your suggestions
Reducing Illiteracy in Rural Areas
– Animated interactive, teaching materials
A recent Decree from the Lao Government is aimed at reducing illiteracy in poor rural and semi-urban districts where there's a lack of books, teachers, facilities and motivation.
Our project is to use Animation-Education with visual "comic" books which can have a great impact on children especially if they're "Interactive" through coloring-in answers. This easy to understand animation would also enable parents to learn with their children at home.
First phase educational materials (for use where there’s no electricity TV's or CD players), are plastic coated books and cards to teach Lao followed by the usual school subjects such as geography and history as well as education on health, environment, unexploded bombs, sex trafficking and other issues.
Our project leader, Mike Browne has already done the same work in South Korea and Japan and is adapting past projects for use in Laos.
We have a good potential partner in the Foundation "Room to Read" which can assure wide distribution of our products through its existing network in rural schools throughout Laos and also have our products approved for mainstream education as it already has an agreement with the Ministry of Education.
Teaching English through Interactive Animation techniques
A recent Decree from the Lao Government is aimed at expanding English education from the 3rd to 12 grades, but there's a lack of books, mother tongue English speaking teachers and facilities.
The target population is more urban, as in rural areas there is still a literacy problem in Lao and English is out of reach, so users will probably have access to electricity, DVD and CD players
Teaching English through Interactive Animation techniques has the following advantages:
a) Interactive, animated DVD's and CD's can have a great impact on motivation, similar to playing interactive games by adults and children.
b) Using native English speakers in the DVD's and CD's counters the lack of mother tongue English speaking teachers, books and facilities in Laos
c) They also have a community effect creating groups, with parents and friends participating in the interaction and learning from each other
The first phase of our project to translate and adapt materials developed for South Korea and Japan for use in Laos. Mike Browne, who heads up this project, participated in producing many of these educational aids. The first of which is "Common Mistakes", as described in our 4 page project description available for anyone interested in sponsoring this project.
Future phases would include the usual school subjects such as geography and history as well as education on health, environment, unexploded bombs, sex trafficking and other issues.
